Travel Insurance for UAE Residents

Most UAE residents already carry local health insurance, and most of it stops working the moment you leave the country. Travel insurance covers the gap. Mapshore arranges it alongside your holiday or visa file, so the policy matches the trip on your ticket.

What travel insurance covers for UAE residents

Emergency medical treatment and hospitalisation abroad, evacuation and repatriation to the UAE, personal accident cover, and compensation for delayed or lost baggage. Trip cancellation and curtailment are available on most plans and are worth taking on longer or multi-country routes.

Repatriation matters more here than travellers assume. Bringing someone home from Europe or the Far East without cover runs into tens of thousands of dirhams, and it is the one line on a policy that families never budget for.

Travel insurance for a Schengen visa from the UAE

A Schengen application filed from the UAE needs insurance with at least 30,000 euro of medical cover, valid across all 29 Schengen states for the entire stay, and including repatriation. We issue that certificate with the visa file so the two documents agree. VFS will return a file where they do not.

Several other destinations ask for proof of cover depending on your passport rather than your residency, so the requirement is not the same for every resident of the same building. We check it against your specific passport before you apply.

Your country of residence on the policy

If you hold a UAE residence visa, your policy needs to name the UAE as your country of residence, not your country of citizenship. A policy issued against the wrong residency is technically void, and it is a mistake we see regularly on cover bought online. We set it correctly at issue.

Visitors on a tourist visa can be covered too, though the plan and pricing differ. Domestic helpers travelling with a family and drivers on the same itinerary can normally be added to a group policy rather than insured separately.

Buying travel insurance with your trip

Because the booking and the policy sit on the same desk, dates, destinations and passenger details come from the itinerary rather than being retyped. That removes the most common cause of a refused claim, which is a policy whose dates or country list do not match the ticket. Change your plans and we move the policy at the same time.

How to make a travel insurance claim

Call the Dubai desk first, before you pay a hospital. Most insurers want notification within 24 hours and will arrange cashless treatment at a network hospital, which saves you fronting the cost. We work the claim with the insurer, chase the paperwork and stay with it until it settles.

Travel insurance questions UAE residents ask

  • Does my UAE health insurance cover me abroad?

Usually not. The mandatory Dubai Essential Benefit Plan lists treatment outside the UAE as not covered at all. Enhanced employer plans often add emergency-only cover abroad, capped and sometimes limited to a named list of countries. Check your table of benefits, and assume you need separate travel cover unless it says otherwise in writing.

  • Is travel insurance mandatory for a Schengen visa from Dubai?

Yes. A minimum of 30,000 euro of medical cover valid across all 29 Schengen states for the full stay, including repatriation. We issue a compliant certificate as part of the visa file.

  • Which country of residence goes on my travel insurance policy?

The UAE, if you hold a residence visa here, regardless of your passport. A policy issued against the wrong country of residence can be treated as void at claim stage.

  • Can I insure my family on one travel insurance policy?

Yes, and a family plan is normally cheaper than separate individual policies. Everyone must be travelling on the same itinerary for the same dates.

  • What should I do if I am hospitalised abroad?

Call us or the insurer's emergency line before you settle any bill. They will arrange cashless treatment at a network hospital where one exists. If you pay first, keep every original bill and report, because copies are usually refused.

  • Do I get a refund on travel insurance if my visa is refused?

Most insurers refund the premium if the visa is refused, as long as the trip has not started, no claim has been made, and you provide the consulate's refusal letter. Some deduct an administration fee. Send us the letter and we handle the cancellation with the insurer.
