USA from the UAE โ A Holiday for Dubai and Abu Dhabi Residents
The United States is a long-haul trip from the UAE, but residents do it often. Families visit relatives and combine it with sightseeing, couples take two weeks to see the coasts, and friends add Las Vegas and the national parks. The usual first-time route is the East Coast: New York, Niagara Falls, Washington DC and sometimes Boston or Philadelphia. California and Florida are the other two classics.
Mapshore's USA packages for UAE travellers are built around the practical issues of the trip: a B1/B2 visa that takes time to arrange, a flight of 13 hours or more, and a time difference that makes the first two days slow. Our team can help you plan around visa timing and choose dates that match the weather. Browse the current East Coast highlights package to see how a first trip is structured.
Where to Go in the USA
- New York โ Times Square, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge and the museums. Plan at least 3 nights.
- Niagara Falls โ about 6 hours by road from New York or a short flight to Buffalo. The falls are at their best from late spring to early autumn.
- Washington DC โ the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums and the memorials, most of them free to enter.
- California โ Los Angeles, San Francisco, Yosemite and the coastal road. Distances are large, so a rental car or domestic flights are needed.
- Florida โ Orlando theme parks, Miami beaches and the Keys. Good for family trips with children.
- Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon โ often combined in a west-coast loop.
Visa: B1/B2 for UAE Residents
Most UAE residents need a B1/B2 visitor visa to enter the United States. You complete the DS-160 online form, pay the visa fee, book an appointment at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate General in Dubai, and attend an in-person interview. Wait times for interviews vary through the year, so apply early and check the current schedule on the official US Department of State and embassy sites. The fee and any additional charges can change, so confirm the amount on the official portal before paying. Do not buy flights until your visa is approved. Read the step-by-step guide on our USA tourist visa page.
ESTA: Who Can Use It?
ESTA is not a visa. It is an online travel authorisation for citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries, such as the UK and many European countries, Australia and Japan. It depends on your passport, not on your UAE residency. If you hold a passport from India, Pakistan, the Philippines or other countries that are outside the programme, ESTA does not apply and you will need a B1/B2 visa. The list of eligible countries and the conditions change from time to time, so check the official ESTA website, and be careful with look-alike paid sites.
Flights from Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Direct flights operate from Dubai to New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, Boston, Houston, Dallas and a few other cities, and from Abu Dhabi to New York, Washington and some others, depending on the airline and season. Typical flight times are around 13 to 14 hours to New York or Washington and 15 to 16 hours to Los Angeles or San Francisco. The return journey from the US is longer because of the headwinds. If you want to reach Florida, Las Vegas or smaller cities, expect a connection in the US or Europe. Allow for the time difference of 8 to 9 hours to New York, and 11 to 12 hours to California, with a change when daylight saving ends.
Best Time to Visit
April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months for the East Coast, with mild weather and fewer crowds than July and August. Autumn brings the foliage in New England. December has Christmas lights and ice rinks in New York but brings cold weather. California is pleasant through most of the year, and Florida is best from November to April before the summer heat, humidity and hurricane season. Summer school holidays in the UAE fall in peak season in the US, so prices for hotels and flights are higher.
Budget and Practical Notes
The USA is among the more expensive holidays for UAE residents, mainly because of accommodation, food and tipping. Plan for a budget of about US$150 to US$300 per person per day for meals, local transport, attractions and tips, apart from your package, with big differences between cities. Tipping of 15 to 20 per cent in restaurants is normal, and sales tax is added at the till. Make sure your travel insurance covers medical costs in the US, since healthcare is expensive. Halal food is easy to find in the larger cities. Browse all USA packages or see all holidays from the UAE.
Do UAE residents need a visa for the USA?
Most do. Citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries can apply for ESTA, but UAE residency does not make you eligible. If your passport is not on the list, apply for a B1/B2 visa through the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate General in Dubai. See our USA tourist visa guide.
How long is the flight from Dubai to the USA?
Roughly 13 to 14 hours non-stop to New York or Washington, and 15 to 16 hours to Los Angeles or San Francisco. Flights to other cities usually involve a connection. Check the schedule of your airline, because routes change.
What is the best time to visit the USA from the UAE?
April to June and September to October for the East Coast, and November to April for Florida. California works for most of the year. Avoid booking the visa late, because the interview wait times can be long during the peak season.
