Travel Insurance for Indian Travellers

Insurance is the part of a trip nobody thinks about until something goes wrong, and then it is the only thing that matters. Mapshore arranges cover alongside your holiday or visa file, so the policy actually matches the trip you booked rather than a generic template.

What overseas travel insurance covers

A standard policy through us carries emergency medical treatment and hospitalisation abroad, evacuation and repatriation, personal accident cover, and reimbursement for lost or delayed baggage. Trip cancellation and curtailment are available on most plans, and matter more than travellers expect on multi-country itineraries where one missed connection unravels the rest.

Loss of passport is covered on the plans we use, including the cost of an emergency travel document. For travellers carrying expensive camera or ski equipment, the baggage limit on a base plan is usually too low, so we flag that before you buy rather than after you claim.

Travel insurance for a Schengen visa from India

A Schengen visa application will not be accepted without insurance carrying at least 30,000 euro of medical cover, valid across all 29 Schengen states for the full length of stay, and including repatriation. We issue that certificate as part of the visa file, so the policy and the application are consistent. Getting this wrong is one of the more common reasons a Schengen file comes back for correction.

Coverage alone is not enough from India. The Schengen consulates publish an approved list of Indian travel insurance companies through VFS Global, and a policy from an insurer outside that list is refused whatever the sum insured says. It is a quiet rejection reason, because the certificate looks correct to the applicant. We place your policy with an approved insurer and check the list is current on the day we file.

Several other destinations have their own rules. Cuba, Turkey and Russia all require proof of cover for certain applicants, and some Gulf entry categories ask for it too. We check the requirement against your specific passport and route instead of assuming.

Buying travel insurance with your holiday or visa

Because the booking and the policy sit on the same desk, the dates, destinations and traveller details are taken from the itinerary rather than retyped. That removes the single most common cause of a rejected claim, which is a policy whose dates or country list do not match the ticket. If your plans shift, tell us and we adjust the policy at the same time as the booking.

Families travelling together are usually cheaper on a single family plan than on separate individual ones. Travellers over 60, and anyone with a declared pre-existing condition, need a plan that is priced for it, so we quote those separately rather than showing a headline rate that will not hold.

How to make a travel insurance claim

Call us first. Most insurers require notification within 24 hours of a medical event and want a cashless hospital arranged through their network, which is faster than paying and claiming back. Our Kerala desk works your claim with the insurer directly, chases documentation, and stays on it until it settles.

Travel insurance questions travellers ask

  • How much does travel insurance cost from India?

For a week in Southeast Asia expect a few hundred rupees per traveller. A month in Europe with Schengen compliant medical limits costs more, and cover for travellers over 60 is priced separately. We quote against your actual dates rather than a headline rate.

  • Can I buy travel insurance after booking my flights?

Yes, and most travellers do. Buying earlier is better if you want cancellation cover, because that only protects you against events that happen after the policy starts. Medical and baggage cover works the same either way.

  • Does travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

Only if it is declared and accepted at the time of purchase. An undeclared condition is the most common reason a medical claim is refused. Tell us at the quote stage and we will place you on a plan that accepts it.

  • Can senior citizens over 60 get travel insurance from India?

Yes, on plans written for that age band. Premiums rise with age, most insurers ask for a medical declaration past 70, and pre-existing conditions are covered only for life-threatening emergencies and only up to a sub-limit. We quote seniors separately so the price you see is the price that holds.

  • What documents do I need for a travel insurance claim?

The policy certificate, your passport and visa pages, original bills and medical reports for a health claim, or the airline property irregularity report for baggage. Keep everything, including boarding passes, until the claim closes.

  • Is travel insurance mandatory for a Schengen visa from India?

Yes. You need a minimum of 30,000 euro of medical cover valid across all 29 Schengen states for the full stay, including repatriation. The insurer must also appear on the approved list published through VFS Global. We issue a compliant certificate as part of the visa file.

  • Do I get a refund on travel insurance if my visa is refused?

Most Indian insurers refund the premium on a visa refusal, provided the trip has not started, no claim has been made, and you send them the consulate's refusal letter. A cancellation fee is sometimes deducted. Tell us as soon as the decision arrives and we file it for you.
