Do UAE Residents Need a China Visa?

It depends on the passport you hold, not on the fact that you live in the UAE. Most expatriate residents of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other emirates need a visa before travelling to mainland China. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Egyptian, Nepali and most other nationalities living in the UAE apply for an L (tourist) visa through the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre (CVASC) in the UAE. A UAE residence visa and Emirates ID do not give visa-free entry to China.

The exception is Emirati citizens. • Employment letter (NOC): On company letterhead confirming your job title, salary, years of service and approved leave, plus a copy of the trade licence for the company.
• Self-employed or business owners: Trade licence, company bank statements and a cover letter describing the business.
• Cover letter: One page explaining the purpose of travel, cities, dates, and who is paying.
• Family applicants: Marriage certificate for spouses and birth certificates for children, with the sponsor's passport, residence visa and salary certificate for dependants.
• Previous Chinese visas: Copies of earlier visas or stamps help show a clean history.

Hold the original documents when you go to the centre. Staff check the file in front of you, and returning for a missing paper costs a day. If your passport is held by your employer, get it released before you plan the appointment.

Standard processing at the UAE CVASC has traditionally been about 4 working days. An express option of 2 to 3 working days is available where offered. Peak periods around Chinese New Year, Golden Week, Eid and the UAE summer exodus add days to the queue. Applications that need extra documents or consular review take longer than any quoted figure.

• Regular salary credits: Statements that show a salary being paid and spent normally look credible. Large lump-sum deposits shortly before applying do not.

• Dependants: Family members living on the sponsor's visa should attach the sponsor's salary certificate and statements.
• Payments in China: Alipay and WeChat Pay are the default way of paying, and foreign card support has improved in major cities. Carry some yuan and set up payment methods before you fly.

Salary level matters less than clean documentation. Applicants with modest incomes are approved when the story is consistent and ties to the UAE are clear.

• 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit: Open to citizens of a long list of countries, reported as 55 or more, that includes the UAE. You must hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, passport validity of at least three months, and enter and exit through an eligible port. The nationality is the passport holder's, not the country of residence, so an Indian or Pakistani passport living in Dubai is not covered because of living in the UAE.
• Expatriate residents: Unless your passport nationality is on the visa-free or transit list, you apply for an L or G visa.
• GCC neighbours: China has also introduced visa waivers for some Gulf states. These depend on citizenship, not residence in the UAE.
