Do UAE Residents Need a Netherlands Tourist Visa?

It depends on your passport. The Netherlands is a member of the Schengen Area, and most of the Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, Egyptian, Nepali and other nationals who live in the UAE need a Schengen "C" visa to visit it. UAE citizens and a few other nationalities do not. A UAE residence visa and an Emirates ID do not replace a Schengen visa, but they are essential supporting papers because they show where you live and that you have a reason to come back. The Schengen "C" visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area. The Netherlands is a very popular first stop for Dubai families, thanks to direct flights from Dubai to Amsterdam and the ease of onward travel by train to Belgium, Germany and France.

Most leisure travellers need the standard uniform Schengen visa, but the right category and the right country both matter.

• Short-stay Schengen "C" visa, single entry: The standard choice for a holiday or family visit. It is valid for one entry, so leaving the Schengen Area ends it.
• Short-stay Schengen "C" visa, multiple entry: Issued where the applicant has a good travel history and a reason to enter more than once. It is not automatic for first-time applicants. The European Union has adopted rules that allow longer multiple-entry visas for some nationalities with a record of lawful earlier use of Schengen visas, so ask about the current position for your passport.
• Visit to family or friends: The same Schengen visa with an invitation or a sponsorship declaration from a host in the Netherlands, together with proof of their residence status.
• Business visit: For meetings, conferences and trade fairs, with an invitation from the Dutch host and an employer letter.
• Airport transit visa: Some nationalities need one to change planes in a Schengen airport even without leaving the terminal. Check your passport and route.
• Long stay "D" visa (MVV): For study, work or joining family for more than 90 days. This is a different process and not covered here.

Which country should you apply to? The rule is that you apply to the Schengen country that is your main destination, meaning the one where you will spend the longest part of the trip. If the stay is split equally, you apply to the country of first entry. If you plan three nights in Amsterdam and a week in Paris, the Netherlands is not the right country to apply to, and you should read our France visa page instead. The Dutch authorities decide on the file you submit. Build it before you book the appointment and check each item against the official checklist, because the Netherlands Worldwide site and the VFS Global centre may ask for more in your case.

• Passport: Valid for at least 3 months beyond the date you intend to leave the Schengen Area, issued within the last 10 years, with at least two blank pages. Many centres prefer 6 months validity.
• UAE residence visa and Emirates ID: A valid UAE residence permit with at least 3 to 6 months of remaining validity beyond your return, and both sides of the Emirates ID. A short remaining validity is a frequent cause of refusal.
• Visa application form: The completed and signed Schengen form for the Netherlands.
• Photographs: Recent colour photos in the Schengen format (35 x 45 mm, plain light background, neutral expression).
• Flight reservation: A return reservation showing the dates, not a paid non-refundable ticket. Check the official instructions first.
• Accommodation proof: Hotel reservations for the whole stay or an invitation from a host in the Netherlands.
• Schengen travel insurance: Medical cover of at least EUR 30,000 valid in all Schengen states for the whole stay, including repatriation.

• Cover letter and itinerary: A short letter and a day-by-day plan consistent with your bookings.
• Family documents: Marriage and birth certificates for spouse and children. Sponsored dependants add the sponsor's documents and a no-objection letter.

Keep every name identical across the passport, residence permit, bank statement, ticket and employer letter. Transliteration differences are a frequent cause of questions. Documents not in English or Dutch should have a certified translation.

Bring originals and a set of copies. The centre keeps the copies and checks the originals. Use a clear folder and put the papers in the order of the checklist.

The Schengen fee is set in euros and is the same in every member state, so the Netherlands charges what France or Germany charge. The fee is collected in the local currency at the centre, together with a separate service charge. EUR 90 comes to roughly AED 360 to AED 400 at recent rates, but the rate moves and the centre sets its own conversion, so treat this as a guide. • Unexplained deposits: Large cash deposits or transfers without explanation raise questions. Add a short note with supporting paper if one exists.
• Sponsor letters: If a relative pays, include a sponsorship letter, their passport copy, 6 months of their bank statements and proof of the relationship. A host in the Netherlands also provides proof of status.
