Do UAE Residents Need a Spain Tourist Visa?

It depends on the passport, not on UAE residency. UAE citizens and some other nationalities can enter the Schengen Area without a visa, but most expatriates living in the UAE, including holders of Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and many other passports, need a Schengen visa for Spain. Holding a UAE residence visa does not remove that requirement. It is one of your supporting documents. For a holiday the short-stay category applies, but other purposes use different documents, so choose carefully.

• Type C tourist visa: The standard choice for holidays, city breaks, beach trips and family travel of up to 90 days. It can be single, double or multiple entry. First-time applicants normally receive a visa matched to their dates.
• Visiting family or friends: For travellers who stay with a host in Spain. The host provides an invitation and a copy of their ID or residence permit, and you must prove the relationship.
• Business visa: For meetings, trade fairs and conferences, with an invitation from the Spanish company and an employer letter from the UAE.
• Transit visa: Some nationalities need an airport transit visa even for a connection in Spain. Check the Spanish rules for your passport before booking a connection through Madrid or Barcelona.
• Multiple-entry visa: Spanish consulates can issue longer visas to applicants with an established Schengen travel record, but first-time applicants should not count on it.
• Spanish residence or long-stay visas: Study, work and residence visas are handled through the consulate by a separate procedure and are outside this guide.

• Passport: Valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years and with at least 2 blank pages. Include a copy of the data page and old passports with visas.
• UAE residence visa and Emirates ID: Valid for a period beyond your return from Spain, with copies of both sides of the Emirates ID. A residence permit close to expiry weakens the file.
• Application form: The Schengen short-stay form completed and signed, with details that match the passport.
• Photographs: Recent colour photos in the Schengen format (35 mm by 45 mm) on a plain light background.
• Flight reservation: A round-trip booking showing entry and exit. Choose a booking that can be changed or cancelled until the visa is granted.
• Accommodation: Hotel bookings for the whole stay, or an invitation letter and host documents.
• Travel insurance: A Schengen-compliant policy with at least EUR 30,000 cover for medical emergencies and repatriation, valid across the whole stay.
• Bank statements: Usually the last 6 months of UAE bank statements, stamped by the bank. Salary credits should match your salary certificate.
• Employment letter: A letter on company letterhead giving your position, salary, joining date, approved leave dates and a statement that you will return to work. NOC for the dates of the trip.
• Salary certificate and payslips: Recent documents that match the bank credits.
• Trade licence: For business owners: trade licence, MOA, company bank statements and a letter from the company.
• Cover letter: A short signed letter explaining the purpose, dates, cities, who pays and why you will return to the UAE.
• Itinerary: A day-by-day plan that matches the flights and hotels.
• Family documents: Marriage certificate, birth certificates and consent letters for minors, attested where required.
• Previous visas: Copies of earlier Schengen, UK, US and other visas, which help show your travel history.

Documents in Arabic must be translated into English or Spanish. Dependants on a family residence visa should include the sponsor's documents: the sponsor's passport, residence visa, Emirates ID, salary certificate and bank statements, plus a letter confirming they will bear the cost where relevant. If your employer's NOC is for a period shorter than your trip, correct it before you file.

Spain Visa Fees 2026

The Schengen consular fee is the same across member states. For adults it has been EUR 90 since 11 June 2024. Children aged 6 and under 12 pay EUR 45, and younger children are exempt. The fee is collected in dirhams at the visa application centre at the rate set by the consulate. BLS charges a separate service fee. Neither is refunded if the visa is refused. Agent advertisements quote different totals, so confirm the dirham amount on the BLS Spain UAE site before you pay.

EUR 90 is typically in the region of AED 380 to AED 420, depending on the exchange rate, before the service fee and insurance. This is an estimate and not a quote. Do not pay any person who offers a faster slot or a guaranteed approval. BLS has warned that its staff never ask for cash for an appointment or a quicker decision.

Spain handles Schengen short-stay applications in the UAE through BLS International. You book an appointment on the BLS Spain UAE website, attend in person with original documents and give biometrics. Spain operates BLS centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Confirm the current addresses, opening hours and the centre that serves your emirate on the BLS site, because addresses and jurisdiction can change.

Slots fill quickly before the summer and around school holidays and Eid, when UAE families travel. Book as soon as your dates are set, and check for cancellations. If Dubai is fully booked, Abu Dhabi often has earlier dates, and the drive is under two hours. Appointments are free to book on the official site. The consulate can extend this to 30 days in individual cases and to 45 days in exceptional circumstances, and it may ask for more documents or an interview, which pauses the clock. • Peak months: May to August, Eid and the winter break bring more applications from UAE families. Apply earlier in these windows.
• Completeness: A missing document triggers a request for more information, and the clock restarts when you reply.

• Holidays: Public holidays in Spain and the UAE can add days.

The best window for most Dubai-based applicants is 6 to 8 weeks before departure. Financial Requirements: How Much Bank Balance Does Spain Expect?

Spain does not publish one balance that guarantees approval. The consulate checks whether your funds are credible for the cost and length of the trip and for the number of travellers. Spanish rules refer to a daily reference amount per traveller that is revised from time to time, so ask BLS or check the consulate notice for the current figure instead of relying on a number from an agent.

• Consistent income: Six months of statements with salary credits that match your salary certificate. Business owners should show company statements and a trade licence.
• No sudden deposits: A large credit just before applying draws questions. If it is a bonus, a sale or a gift, bring proof.
• Funds for the whole trip: The balance should cover flights, hotels, transport, meals, activities and insurance. A family of four on a two-week trip needs a balance that reflects four people.
• Sponsored travel: If a spouse or parent pays, add a sponsorship letter, their ID, their bank statements and proof of the relationship. A dependant with no income should rely on the sponsor's file.
• Ties to the UAE: Residence visa validity, a stable job, tenancy contract, children in school and a long UAE history show that you will return.

• Wrong consulate: Applying to Spain when most nights are in another Schengen country. If Spain is not your main destination, or your first point of entry in an equal split, the application can be refused or returned.
• Travel insurance problems: Cover below the minimum of EUR 30,000, a policy that does not run for the whole stay or is not valid across the Schengen area, or a certificate with the wrong dates.
• Passport issues: Fewer than 3 months of validity after the planned departure from Schengen, an issue date more than 10 years ago, or too few blank pages.
• Unverifiable or doubtful documents: An employer letter without contact details, an NOC that cannot be checked, edited PDFs or bookings that cannot be verified. Fake or altered documents can lead to a long ban, not just a refusal.
• Previous overstays or visa history: A prior overstay, a refusal from another country that you do not mention or an inconsistent answer on the form about earlier Schengen visas.
• Alert in the Schengen Information System: A rare cause, usually not something an applicant can fix without the authority that raised the alert.
