Pick your month by what you want to see
Kashmir is not one destination across the year, it is four different ones. Decide what you want first, then let the month follow. All of it pairs with our Kashmir holiday packages from Kerala, which run through the main season with local drivers and fixed stays. If safety is your first question rather than season, read is Kashmir safe to visit in 2026 first.
Month-by-month table
| Months | What it looks like | Crowds and prices | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| March to mid-April | Tulips in Srinagar, snow on the peaks, chilly nights | Moderate, rising for tulip weeks | Tulip garden, first-timers avoiding summer rush |
| Mid-April to June | Green meadows, full circuit open, pleasant days | Peak crowds, highest hotel rates | Families, honeymoons, full sightseeing |
| July to August | Lush valleys, occasional rain, Amarnath season | Busy, book early | Long trips, Lidder and Sindh valley time |
| September to October | Golden chinar leaves, clear skies, thinning crowds | Shoulder, better rates | Photography, calm travel, value |
| November | Quiet, cold nights, some properties close | Low, cheapest stays | Budget trips if you accept the cold |
| December to February | Snow in Gulmarg, frozen Dal Lake edges | High for Gulmarg, low elsewhere | Skiing and snow only |
The two best windows, honestly
For most Kerala travellers the answer is April to June or September to October. Summer gives you everything open and the classic Kashmir of the postcards, at peak prices. Autumn gives you golden foliage, clear mountain views and calmer hotels for less money, with only the high meadows thinning out. Travellers who have already done the summer circuit often say autumn was the better trip.
Tulip season (late March to mid-April) deserves its own note. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden blooms for a short window and Srinagar fills specifically for it. If tulips are the reason, fix dates around the bloom reports, not the calendar, and book the Srinagar stay first.
Winter: only for snow travellers
December to February is a specialist season. Gulmarg runs skiing and the Gondola, Dal Lake can freeze at the edges, and Srinagar gets quiet and atmospheric. But Sonmarg closes, some hotels shut, flights delay in snowfall, and days are short. Come in winter only if snow is the point of the trip, keep a buffer day, and confirm flights the night before.
Booking lead times from Kerala
Kochi to Srinagar has no direct flight, so routings go via Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore. Summer fares climb from March, so book flights 6 to 8 weeks out for April to June travel. Houseboats and Boulevard Road hotels for May weekends go first. Gondola Phase 2 tickets release in limited lots and sell out in peak weeks, so confirm them before you pay for anything else. September and October can be planned 3 to 4 weeks out with normal availability.
Frequently asked questions
November is cheapest for stays, with September and October offering the best balance of good weather and fair prices. Avoid expecting bargains in May and June.
Kashmir gets far less rain than Kerala and remains very visitable in July and August. Roads to high meadows can pause after cloudbursts, so keep the itinerary flexible by a day.
Five to six days cover Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam at a comfortable pace. Add Sonmarg with a sixth or seventh day. Anything under four days spends more time transferring than seeing.
Typically late March to mid-April, varying with that year's snowfall and spring temperatures. Follow the garden's opening announcement rather than fixing dates months ahead.
October days are pleasant with cold nights. Carry one heavy layer for evenings and mornings. Hotels start switching on heating, which is worth confirming when booking budget stays.
