Winter is the season, everything else is a tradeoff
Rajasthan is a desert state and that decides the calendar. October to March is the window when forts are walkable at noon and desert nights are cold enough for a bonfire. Plan inside it and the trip almost runs itself. Our Rajasthan holiday packages from Kerala run in this window with fixed group departures and private options. For the same month-by-month thinking applied to the north, see our best time to visit Kashmir guide.
Season and cost table
| Season | Weather | Crowds and rates | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct to Nov | Warm days, cool nights, Diwali and Pushkar Fair crowds | High, festival premiums on stays | Festival travellers, first-timers |
| Dec to Jan | Cold mornings, clear days, peak season | Highest rates, book earliest | Families, honeymoons, full circuit |
| Feb to Mar | Warming up, Holi colours, thinning crowds | High easing to moderate | Value-conscious travellers who still want good weather |
| Apr to Jun | Harsh heat, 40-plus days | Lowest rates, empty forts | Budget trips only if you accept indoor afternoons |
| Jul to Sep | Humid spells, green patches, monsoon breaks | Low to moderate | Off-season explorers, photographers |
How season moves your budget
The same itinerary can cost dramatically different amounts by month, and three levers move together. Stays swing hardest: heritage havelis and desert camps in Jaisalmer charge peak premiums from December to January and discount steeply in summer. Flights from Kochi to Jaipur follow the same curve with festival weeks spiking. And activities like desert safaris and lake cruises price by demand, with Pushkar Fair and New Year at the top.
The practical move is to pick your month first, then ask for the quote. A November quote and a January quote for identical plans will not match, and that is normal. Share your dates upfront so the estimate reflects the actual season instead of a generic number. Request options through our Rajasthan packages page and the quote will carry the season-correct stays and transfers.
Festival premiums worth knowing
Pushkar Camel Fair (October to November) and Diwali week lift hotel rates across the state, with Pushkar itself selling out earliest. Christmas and New Year do the same for Udaipur and Jaipur lake and palace properties. Desert Festival Jaisalmer (January to February) packs the Sam dunes camps. If a festival is the reason for the trip, book stays before flights. If it is not the reason, check your dates against the festival calendar so you do not pay the premium by accident.
Booking lead times from Kerala
Kochi to Jaipur has limited direct connectivity, so most routings go via Bangalore, Mumbai or Delhi. For December and January travel, book flights 8 weeks out and heritage stays even earlier, since the good havelis have few rooms. October, November and February trips can be planned 4 to 5 weeks out. Summer trips need barely two weeks, which is the one real advantage of the heat.
Frequently asked questions
December and January for weather, October to November for festivals, February to March for the best balance of weather and cost.
Yes for sightseeing. Daytime fort visits become gruelling from April. Summer works only for travellers chasing the lowest rates who plan indoor afternoons and early-morning outings.
Six to seven days cover Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur. Add Jaisalmer with two more days. Anything under five days should stick to two cities.
If fairs and culture are your thing, absolutely. Book Pushkar stays months ahead and accept the premium. Otherwise route around those dates.
It depends on month, hotel tier and group size more than anything else. Winter heritage stays cost multiples of summer rates for the same room. Share dates and hotel preference for an exact written quote rather than trusting a generic number.
