Rajasthan from Kerala โ Forts, Palaces and the Thar Desert
Rajasthan is the most popular domestic holiday for travellers from Kerala who want history rather than backwaters. In a single trip you can walk through the Amber Fort in Jaipur, take a boat on Lake Pichola in Udaipur, look down on the blue rooftops of Jodhpur from Mehrangarh, and watch the sun set over the dunes near Jaisalmer. It also works for almost every kind of group: families with grandparents, friends travelling together, couples, and women-only groups.
Distances are the main thing to plan around. The major cities are 4 to 7 hours apart by road, and the quality of a trip depends on how well the route is sequenced. Mapshore's Rajasthan packages use fixed circuits with private cars, English-speaking drivers, hotels inside or near the old city, and realistic daily driving times, so you spend more time at the forts than on the highway.
Where to Go in Rajasthan
- Jaipur โ the Pink City. Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and the bazaars for textiles and jewellery. Most itineraries start here. See Jaipur packages.
- Udaipur โ lakes, the City Palace complex and sunset boat rides. It is the most romantic stop and the usual honeymoon pick.
- Jodhpur โ Mehrangarh Fort, the old Blue City and Umaid Bhawan. A good transit stop between Udaipur and Jaisalmer.
- Jaisalmer โ the golden fort, havelis and Sam or Khuri sand dunes for camel safaris and desert camps. Plan at least one night here.
- Pushkar and Ajmer โ the Brahma temple, the lake ghats and the Ajmer Sharif dargah, an easy side trip from Jaipur. See the Jaipur, Ajmer and Pushkar tour.
Circuit Durations
- 4 nights โ Jaipur with Ajmer and Pushkar. A compact first trip. Try the 4-night Rajasthan group tour.
- 6 to 7 nights โ Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur, or Jaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. The classic first-time route.
- 8 to 10 nights โ Jaipur, Pushkar, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur, with time for Ranakpur or Bikaner. Needed if you want the desert and the lakes in one trip.
Keep Jaisalmer and Udaipur separate unless you have at least 8 nights; they are a full day apart by road.
Flights from Kochi and South India
There is no consistent direct flight from Kochi to Rajasthan. Most travellers connect through Bengaluru, Mumbai or Delhi, which takes roughly 5 to 7 hours door to door to Jaipur. Direct flights are available from Bengaluru and Hyderabad to Jaipur and Udaipur on several carriers, so if you are in Kochi, compare itineraries via Bengaluru and Mumbai. Jodhpur and Jaisalmer have smaller airports with limited services, so many itineraries fly into Jaipur and out of Udaipur, or the reverse, rather than returning along the same route. Open-jaw tickets save a full day of driving. Trains from Ernakulam to Jaipur take around 36 to 40 hours, which is fine if you have time, but most Kerala groups prefer flying.
Best Time to Visit
October to March is the best season, with daytime temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees and cool desert evenings. December and January nights can drop to single digits in Jaisalmer, so pack a jacket. April to June is extremely hot, 40 degrees and above, although hotels are cheaper. July to September is the monsoon; the landscape is green and Udaipur is at its most beautiful, but desert activities may be limited. Book Diwali, Christmas and New Year dates early because palace hotels fill up.
Budget and Practical Notes
Package costs depend mainly on hotel category and the number of cities. Beyond that, budget roughly โน1,500 to โน2,500 per person per day for meals, monument entry tickets (โน50 to โน600 for Indian nationals, depending on the monument) and shopping. Elephant rides and camel safaris are priced separately. Vegetarian food is easy to find throughout the state, and rice-based meals are available in most tourist restaurants. What is the best time to visit Rajasthan from Kerala?
October to March is the best time. Days are pleasant for forts and sightseeing, and nights are cool enough for desert camps. April to June is very hot. July to September is the monsoon, which suits Udaipur but not dune safaris.
How many days are enough for Rajasthan?
4 to 5 nights covers Jaipur with Ajmer and Pushkar. 6 to 7 nights adds Jodhpur and either Udaipur or Jaisalmer. 8 to 10 nights lets you do the full circuit without long driving days. Rajasthan is large, so choosing fewer cities usually gives a better trip.
How do I reach Rajasthan from Kochi?
Fly from Kochi to Jaipur with a connection in Bengaluru, Mumbai or Delhi, usually 5 to 7 hours in total. Udaipur and Jodhpur can be reached the same way. Consider flying into one city and out of another to avoid doubling back. No visa is needed because it is a domestic trip, but carry a valid photo ID for hotel check-in and monument entry.
