Kashmir from Kerala โ Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg
Kashmir is the Himalayan holiday most Kerala families put on their list once they have done Munnar and Ooty. The Valley offers things South India cannot: snow in winter, tulips in spring, meadows in summer and gold chinar leaves in autumn. A first trip usually covers four places. Srinagar for Dal Lake and the Mughal gardens, Gulmarg for the gondola and snow, Pahalgam for river valleys and pony rides, and Sonamarg for glaciers and the Thajiwas trail.
Mapshore's Kashmir packages are planned for travellers from Kochi, Trivandrum and Kozhikode. That means flights routed from Kerala, private cars with experienced hill drivers, houseboat and hotel stays in Srinagar, and daily plans that allow for slow mountain roads and weather changes. Meals are mostly Kashmiri and North Indian, so say early if your group needs rice-based or vegetarian options and we will arrange it where possible.
Where to Go in Kashmir
- Srinagar โ Dal Lake shikara rides, a night on a houseboat, Nishat and Shalimar gardens, the old city and Shankaracharya Hill. Almost every itinerary starts and ends here.
- Gulmarg โ a ski resort and meadow about 2 hours from Srinagar. The Gulmarg Gondola goes up in two stages; tickets are usually booked online in advance for the higher stage, so check the official booking site before you travel.
- Pahalgam โ Lidder River, Betaab Valley and Aru Valley, about 3 hours from Srinagar. Popular for families because the terrain is gentle.
- Sonamarg โ about 2.5 to 3 hours from Srinagar, with the Thajiwas Glacier. Weather can close access at short notice, so keep it flexible in the plan.
Itinerary Length
Five days is the minimum that feels comfortable. Four-day plans work only if your flights land early in the morning.
Flights from Kochi and South India
There is no regular direct flight from Kochi to Srinagar. Most travellers connect through Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru, which takes roughly 6 to 9 hours door to door depending on the layover. Delhi is the most common connection because several carriers operate Delhi to Srinagar through the day. Early flights are better, because the afternoon weather in the Valley is more likely to delay landings. Fares rise sharply in May, June and the Christmas period, so book as early as you can. Ask about open-jaw options if you plan to include Jammu or Delhi sightseeing.
Permits, ID and Mobile Networks
Indian citizens do not need a special permit for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg. Carry a valid government photo ID such as an Aadhaar or passport, because hotels and checkpoints ask for it. Some high-altitude points and border-adjacent areas have separate rules, so check with your tour manager. Foreign passport holders should check the current rules with the official portal. For phones, prepaid SIM cards from other states have historically not worked in Jammu and Kashmir, while postpaid connections generally do. Confirm with your operator before you fly.
Best Time to Visit
April to June has mild weather, open meadows and, in the first weeks of spring, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar. July and August are warm in the plains but comfortable in the Valley, and Sonamarg is at its best. October and November bring autumn colours and clear skies. December to February is the snow season for Gulmarg and the cold season elsewhere, with temperatures often below zero. Pack layers for every month, because evenings are cool even in summer.
Safety and Official Advisories
Kashmir has had periods of unrest and security incidents, including in Pahalgam in 2025. Tourism has continued since, but conditions can change. Before you book, check the latest advisories from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism department, and read local news close to your departure date. Mapshore monitors conditions and will contact you about any changes to the plan. Keep your itinerary flexible, buy travel insurance that covers trip interruption, and follow the guidance from your driver and local authorities. Avoid travelling on roads at night.
Budget and Practical Notes
Package prices depend on the season, the hotel category and whether you choose a houseboat. For personal expenses, budget roughly โน1,500 to โน2,500 per person per day for meals outside the package, pony rides, the Gulmarg gondola, shikara rides and shopping. Pony and sledge rates are negotiated locally, so ask your driver for the going rates. Pashmina, saffron and walnut wood make good buys; ask for certified goods. Altitude is modest at Srinagar but higher at Gulmarg and Sonamarg, so older travellers should go slowly. Browse all Kashmir packages or see all holidays.
What is the best time to visit Kashmir from Kerala?
April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months for first-timers. Choose December to February only if you want snow and are happy with cold weather. July and August are fine for Sonamarg and Pahalgam, with occasional rain.
Is Kashmir safe for tourists right now?
Tourists have continued to visit, but conditions can change, so treat any single answer with caution. Check the latest Ministry of External Affairs and Jammu and Kashmir Tourism advisories before booking and again before you leave. Mapshore will tell you if any part of the itinerary needs to change.
How do I reach Kashmir from Kochi?
Fly from Kochi to Srinagar with a connection in Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru, usually 6 to 9 hours in total. No visa is needed because it is a domestic trip, but carry a valid photo ID. Prepaid SIMs from Kerala may not work in the Valley, so confirm with your network provider or plan to use hotel Wi-Fi.
