Do Indians Need a UK Tourist Visa?

Yes — Indian passport holders require a UK Standard Visitor visa to enter the United Kingdom. There is no visa-on-arrival arrangement for Indian nationals, and the UK is not part of the Schengen zone, so a Schengen visa does not give you entry to Britain. You must apply separately through VFS Global, the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) authorised partner for India. The application is made online at GOV.UK before attending a VFS appointment in person to submit biometrics and documents.

The UK visa refusal rate for Indian applicants is roughly 12–16%, higher than many European destinations but very manageable with a thorough application. The most common reason for refusal is not financial — it is a failure to demonstrate strong ties to India and a credible reason to return. A well-prepared application from Kerala, with solid employment evidence and a realistic itinerary, succeeds at a high rate.

UK Visa Types — Which One Do You Need?

The UK offers several visitor visa categories. For tourism, visiting family, short business meetings, or medical treatment, the Standard Visitor visa is the correct choice. It covers the vast majority of applicants travelling from India for leisure purposes. Other visa types exist but are distinct applications with different eligibility rules.

  • Standard Visitor visa: Tourism, family visits, business meetings (no paid work), medical treatment, short courses under 6 months. Maximum stay 6 months per visit. This is the visa covered on this page.
  • Student visa: For courses longer than 6 months at a licensed UK student sponsor. Requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference from the institution.
  • Skilled Worker visa: For those with a confirmed job offer from a UK employer with a sponsorship licence. Entirely separate from visitor routes.
  • Family visa: For joining a spouse, partner, parent, or child who is settled or has status in the UK. Requires ongoing financial thresholds.
  • Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): The UK ETA is for visa-exempt nationalities (e.g. EU, US) — Indian passport holders are not eligible for the ETA and must apply for a Standard Visitor visa.

If your purpose of travel includes paid work, voluntary work, or studying full-time for more than 6 months, the Standard Visitor visa will not cover you. Be honest about your purpose on the application form — misrepresentation is a serious immigration offence and results in a mandatory ban.

UK Standard Visitor Visa — Documents Checklist

UKVI does not publish a rigid list, but the following documents are expected for every application. Missing or inconsistent documents are the most common reason files are returned or refused. Prepare originals and clear A4 photocopies of everything listed below.

  • Passport: Valid for the full duration of your stay with at least one blank page. Carry all previous passports — travel history is a major factor in UK decisions. If your old passport has Schengen, US, or UAE stamps, include it.
  • Photographs: Two recent colour photographs (45 × 35 mm, white or off-white background, taken within the last 6 months). Must not be the same photo used in your passport.
  • Biometric enrolment: Indian applicants must attend a VFS Global appointment to submit fingerprints and a facial photograph. There is no online biometric exemption for Indian nationals.
  • Bank statements: Last 6 months of your primary savings or current account, stamped and signed by the bank. Balance must be consistent — see the financial requirements section below for specific amounts. Large one-off deposits made within 3 months of applying are a red flag and should be explained in a cover letter.
  • Income and employment proof: Salary slips for the last 3 months, employment letter on company letterhead confirming your position, salary, length of service, and approved leave dates. Self-employed: trade licence, last 2 years of ITR acknowledgements, and a CA-certified balance sheet or profit and loss statement.
  • Income Tax Returns (ITR): Last 2 years of ITR filings (Form 26AS or acknowledgement), confirming declared income. This is especially important for self-employed applicants.
  • Travel itinerary: A day-by-day plan showing where you will be in the UK, with accommodation addresses. Hotel booking confirmations (not receipts — just confirmed reservations) for every night. Do not book non-refundable tickets until the visa is approved.
  • Flight bookings: Confirmed itinerary showing onward and return flights. Use a travel agent for a booking reference (PNR) that can be cancelled — avoid purchasing non-refundable tickets before visa approval.
  • Cover letter: A personal statement (1–2 pages) explaining the purpose of your visit, your itinerary, who you are visiting (if applicable), your ties to India (employment, property, family), and why you will return. This is the single most important document.
  • Property documents (if applicable): Aadhaar, Voter ID, or property tax receipts showing you own or jointly own property in India. Strengthens your ties-to-India argument.
  • Sponsor letter (if hosted): If staying with a UK-based friend or relative, they must provide a signed letter confirming they are hosting you, their immigration status in the UK, their address, and their relationship to you. Attach their utility bill and proof of leave to remain / British passport copy.
  • Travel insurance: While not mandatory for UK visas (unlike Schengen), showing valid travel insurance for the full trip duration strengthens your application and is strongly recommended — particularly for medical coverage during your stay.

Students and retired applicants have specific additions: college or university enrolment letters, pension statements, and (for students) a parental sponsorship letter with bank statements. Children under 18 travelling with only one parent need a notarised No Objection Certificate from the absent parent.

UK Visa Fees 2026

UK visa fees are set by the Home Office in British pounds and are converted to INR at the prevailing rate at the time of payment. All fees are non-refundable even if the visa is refused. The table below reflects the fee schedule in effect as of April 2026.

Service Fee (GBP) Approx. INR (at ₹108/£) Processing time
Standard Visitor visa £115 ≈ ₹12,420 15 to 21 working days
Priority service (add-on) £250 ≈ ₹27,000 5 working days
Super Priority service (add-on) £800 ≈ ₹86,400 1 working day (limited VFS locations)
Healthcare surcharge (IHS) — per year £776 ≈ ₹83,800 Per person, per year of approved stay

The Healthcare Surcharge (IHS) is a mandatory charge paid at the time of application. For a Standard Visitor visa of 6 months, the IHS is charged at the full-year rate of £776 per person — even if you are only visiting for 2 weeks. This means for a couple applying together, the IHS alone costs approximately £1,552 (≈ ₹1,67,600) on top of the application fees. Plan for this in your total budget. The VFS Global service fee for the appointment is charged separately (typically ₹2,000–₹3,500) and also non-refundable.

Priority and Super Priority services guarantee a faster decision, not approval. They are worth considering if your travel dates are within 4 weeks of application and you have a complete, clean file. Super Priority is only available at select VFS locations in India — confirm availability at your nearest centre before booking.

Where to Apply in Kerala and India — VFS Global Centres

UK visa applications from India are processed exclusively through VFS Global on behalf of UK Visas and Immigration. You must book an appointment online at visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/gbr before visiting a centre. Walk-ins are not accepted. Biometrics (fingerprints + photo) are collected at the VFS appointment — this step cannot be done remotely or skipped for any Indian national.

City Centre details Notes
Kochi VFS Global, Kochi Closest centre for most Kerala applicants. Priority and Super Priority available.
Kozhikode (Calicut) VFS Global, Kozhikode Serves north Kerala. Standard service; confirm Priority availability when booking.
Delhi VFS Global, New Delhi High-volume centre; book well in advance for peak months.
Mumbai VFS Global, Mumbai Super Priority available.
Chennai VFS Global, Chennai Busy but slots generally more available than Delhi or Mumbai.
Bangalore VFS Global, Bangalore Alternative for those in north Kerala travelling via Bangalore.
Hyderabad VFS Global, Hyderabad Standard service. Good slot availability year-round.

Mapshore's Kochi office and Kozhikode office handle document verification, appointment booking at VFS, and complete file preparation. Our team reviews your bank statements, employment letters, and cover letter before submission — addressing the most common failure points before they reach a UKVI caseworker. You still attend the VFS appointment in person for biometrics, but you arrive with a pre-checked file.

How to Apply Online — GOV.UK Step-by-Step

The UK Standard Visitor visa is applied for entirely online through GOV.UK before you attend a VFS appointment. The process is straightforward but the form is detailed — allow 90–120 minutes to complete it carefully. Errors or inconsistencies between your form and your supporting documents are a common cause of refusal.

Create a UKVI account

Go to apply.visas.homeoffice.gov.uk and create a new account with your email address. This account stores your application and lets you track progress after submission.

Start your application

Select "Standard Visitor" and answer all sections honestly. Key sections include personal details, passport information, travel history (list every country visited in the last 10 years), employment and financial details, and details about your trip.

Pay fees

The application fee (£115) and the IHS charge (£776) are paid online by debit or credit card. Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Keep the payment receipt.

Book VFS appointment

After payment, you are directed to book your biometric appointment at a VFS Global centre in India. Choose your preferred city and the earliest available slot. You will receive a booking confirmation email.

Prepare and attend your VFS appointment

Gather all supporting documents. At the VFS centre, staff scan your documents and collect your fingerprints and photo. The centre does not assess your application — documents and biometrics are forwarded to UKVI.

Wait for decision

Standard processing is 15 working days from the date of your VFS appointment. Track your application status via your UKVI account or the VFS tracking portal. Do not book non-refundable travel until you have the visa in hand.

Collect your passport

UKVI returns your passport with the visa vignette (sticker) via VFS. You can opt for courier return or centre collection. Check the visa details — name, validity dates, number of entries — before leaving the VFS office.

Important: if UKVI requests additional documents during processing (called a "request for further information"), respond promptly — typically within 5 working days of the request. Failing to respond or responding late effectively pauses and then cancels your application.

UK Visa Processing Time 2026

The standard processing time for a UK Standard Visitor visa from India is 15 working days from the date of your biometric appointment at VFS. This is UKVI's published target, not a guarantee — during peak travel seasons (June–August and December–January), processing can extend to 21 working days. UKVI does not offer compensation or escalation if processing takes longer than the target, unless you have paid for Priority or Super Priority service.

  • Standard service: 15 working days target (3 calendar weeks). May extend to 21 working days (approx. 4.5 calendar weeks) during peak season.
  • Priority service (£250 add-on): 5 working days target. Recommended if your travel is 4–6 weeks away and you have a complete file. Not available at all VFS centres — confirm at booking.
  • Super Priority service (£800 add-on): Decision by the next working day after the VFS appointment. Only available at select VFS centres (Delhi, Mumbai and a small number of other metro locations). Check availability before booking.

Mapshore recommends applying a minimum of 6 weeks before travel on standard service, or 3–4 weeks if you add Priority. Do not apply too early either — UKVI generally prefers applications submitted no more than 3 months before your travel date, as a very early application can be seen as a sign that your travel plans are not firm. The sweet spot for most Kerala applicants is 6–8 weeks before departure.

Financial Requirements — How Much Bank Balance Is Needed?

UKVI does not publish a fixed minimum bank balance figure. Instead, caseworkers assess whether your finances are credible for the trip you have planned, relative to your declared income and lifestyle. A useful working figure for a Kerala applicant planning a 2-week trip to the UK is a closing balance of ₹2,50,000–₹5,00,000 — the higher end if you are not staying with family or a sponsor, and if your income level is modest relative to the trip cost.

What UKVI looks for in your bank statements is not just the closing balance — it is the pattern of funds over 6 months. Salary credits should be regular. Withdrawals should be consistent with your declared lifestyle. Large deposits made in the weeks before applying, with no clear source, are a major red flag that caseworkers are trained to identify. If you received a genuine lump sum (bonus, property sale, fixed deposit maturity), attach a document explaining it.

  • Salaried applicants: Salary slips should match the credits on your bank statements. A closing balance of 3–5 times the estimated trip cost is a reasonable guide. For a trip budgeted at ₹1,50,000 (flights, hotel, spending money), aim to show ₹4,00,000–₹5,00,000 in savings.
  • Self-employed applicants: ITR filings and a CA-certified P&L statement carry more weight than bank balance alone. Show consistent business income over at least 2 years.
  • Retired applicants: Pension statements, fixed deposit certificates, and property documents all count. Show that you can fund the trip from accumulated savings without financial hardship.
  • Sponsored applicants: If a UK-based relative is covering all costs, their financial documents (bank statements, salary proof, accommodation confirmation) are submitted alongside yours. You still need to show personal funds sufficient to cover emergencies or in case the sponsor cannot assist.

Avoid the common mistake of transferring money from relatives into your account to inflate the balance just before applying. UKVI sees this pattern repeatedly and routinely refuses applications where the balance is not supported by the income history in the same account.

Common Reasons for UK Visa Refusal from India

Understanding refusal reasons is one of the most effective ways to build a successful application. UKVI refusal letters cite specific paragraphs of the Immigration Rules, but the underlying reasons are usually one or more of the following:

  • Insufficient ties to India: The caseworker is not satisfied you will leave the UK at the end of your permitted stay. This is the number-one reason for refusal from India. Counter it with a strong employment letter, property ownership documents, dependent family members in India, and a cover letter that explicitly addresses why you are returning.
  • Insufficient funds or unexplained deposits: Either the balance is not enough for the trip, or there are large recent deposits with no clear source. Both raise doubts about the credibility of your finances. Six months of consistent, clean banking history resolves this.
  • Incomplete or vague travel history: Applicants with no prior travel history outside India — particularly those with no previous Western visa — face higher scrutiny. If you have previously visited the UAE, USA, Schengen, or other destinations, list every trip. Past compliance with other visas is a significant positive signal.
  • Vague or implausible itinerary: A trip plan that says "sightseeing in London" with no hotel details, no specific attractions, and no realistic budget is weak. A day-by-day itinerary with confirmed accommodation addresses and a realistic daily spend estimate is far stronger.
  • Inconsistencies between form and documents: If your application form states a salary of ₹80,000/month but your bank statements show credits of ₹50,000, a caseworker will question which is accurate. Cross-check every figure before submitting.
  • Previous visa refusals not declared: All previous visa refusals for any country must be declared on the form. Failure to declare a refusal — even from years ago — is treated as misrepresentation and results in an immediate refusal and potential long-term ban.
  • Purpose of visit not credible: If you claim tourism but your profile (student, no income, age group) does not align with a leisure visitor profile without a clear sponsor, UKVI may not be satisfied. Align your purpose, your profile, and your supporting documents.

A refusal is not permanent. You can reapply immediately (there is no mandatory waiting period), but reapplying with the same documents and the same weaknesses will almost certainly result in the same outcome. Address the specific reason cited in your refusal letter before reapplying. Mapshore reviews refusal letters and advises on reapplication strategy.

UK Visa Validity and Conditions

A UK Standard Visitor visa is typically issued as a multiple-entry visa valid for 6 months from the date of issue. This means you can enter the UK multiple times during that 6-month window. However, each individual visit is limited to a maximum of 6 months at a time — you cannot stay continuously for the full 6 months of the visa validity. Each time you enter, the border officer decides how long you may stay, usually stamping your passport or endorsing your entry for up to 6 months.

First-time applicants from India are sometimes issued shorter validity visas (1 month or 3 months) if the caseworker is not fully satisfied with the application but decides to grant rather than refuse. This is less common than a flat refusal, but it does happen. With a clean record and strong application, 6-month multiple-entry is the standard grant.

  • Multiple entry: Yes — you can enter and exit the UK multiple times within the visa validity window.
  • Maximum stay per visit: 6 months. The Border Force officer sets the actual leave-to-enter at the point of arrival.
  • Work permitted: No. A Standard Visitor cannot take paid or unpaid employment, work as a professional sportsperson, or produce goods or provide services in the UK. Business visitors may attend meetings, conferences, and negotiations but not work for a UK employer.
  • Extending your stay: Extensions from within the UK are possible in exceptional circumstances (e.g. medical treatment) but are not a routine option for tourists. Do not plan to extend a tourist visit — leave before your permission expires.
  • UK vs Schengen: Your UK visa gives you no rights in Europe's Schengen area. If you plan to combine a UK trip with a Europe trip, you need both a UK Standard Visitor visa and a separate Schengen visa. Similarly, an Ireland visa is entirely separate from the UK visa — Ireland is not part of Schengen and has its own visa regime.
  • Healthcare surcharge (IHS): Even though you paid the IHS at the time of application, your access to NHS treatment as a visitor is limited. The IHS primarily applies to longer-stay visa categories. As a Standard Visitor, you are entitled to emergency NHS treatment but are generally expected to have private travel insurance for routine medical needs.

Tips for a Strong UK Visa Application

These are the practical steps that consistently separate approved applications from refused ones. They are not shortcuts — they are the discipline of presenting an honest, coherent, well-documented file.

  • Write a specific, convincing cover letter. Do not use a template downloaded from the internet. UKVI caseworkers see these daily. Write in your own words: who you are, where you work, why you want to visit the UK, where you will stay, and — most critically — why you will return to India at the end of the trip. Mention specific attractions or people you plan to see. One well-written page is worth more than five boilerplate pages.
  • Clean your bank account 6 months out. If you know you plan to visit the UK, avoid large unexplained cash deposits or inter-account transfers in the 6 months before applying. Build your savings through regular salary credits. Six clean months of banking is the gold standard.
  • Include a strong employment letter. Ask your HR department for a letter on headed paper that explicitly states: your designation, your salary, your confirmed leave approval dates, and a statement that your employment continues upon your return. Vague letters that simply say "employed here" without leave approval are common and weak.
  • Travel history helps — use it. If you have previously visited the UAE, the USA, Schengen countries, or Canada, make sure to include those old passports and list every trip accurately on your form. Prior compliance with visa conditions in other countries is a strong positive signal to UKVI.
  • Show property ties. If you own or co-own property in India — a home, land, or commercial property — include the property tax receipt or title document. Property ownership is one of the clearest demonstrations that you have roots in India.
  • Do not over-explain refusals, but do declare them. If you have had a previous visa refusal, declare it clearly on the form and include a brief paragraph in your cover letter explaining what has changed since then. Caseworkers are less concerned about a past refusal that you declared than about one you tried to hide.
  • Book flexible travel arrangements. Use a travel agent to get a confirmed flight PNR that can be cancelled. Book refundable or flexible hotel rates. This prevents financial loss if your visa is refused, and it demonstrates that your travel plans are genuine but not recklessly pre-purchased.

First-time UK visa applicants from Kerala typically have the hardest time, not because their applications are weak but because they lack prior Western travel history. The best approach for a first-time applicant is to make every other element of the application as strong as possible — especially the cover letter, employment letter, and bank statements — to compensate for the absence of prior UK or Schengen stamps.

How Mapshore Helps with Your UK Visa Application

Mapshore has been helping Kerala travellers navigate UK visa requirements since the early days of VFS processing in Kochi. Our visa team is not a form-filling service — we are travel consultants who understand what UKVI caseworkers look for, what typically goes wrong, and how to present a client's genuine travel plans in the most credible way possible. We do not guarantee approvals — no one can, because the decision rests with UKVI — but we significantly improve the quality of your application.

When you come to our Kochi office or Kozhikode office, our team will review your documents before you submit them, advise on any gaps or inconsistencies, help you write a strong cover letter, book your VFS appointment, prepare your travel itinerary, and arrange hotel booking confirmations. For repeat travellers, we also handle passport courier and collection. Our fee for the UK visa service is transparent and disclosed upfront — there are no hidden charges added after you engage us.

Beyond the visa itself, Mapshore offers complete UK holiday packages — flights from Cochin International Airport, accommodation in London, Edinburgh, or beyond, day tours, and travel insurance. Bundling your UK trip with Mapshore's travel package means your itinerary, hotel confirmations, and flight bookings are all consistent and co-ordinated, which strengthens your visa file. Clients who book through us rarely face document inconsistency problems because the documents are prepared as a coherent package from the start.

If you have had a previous UK visa refusal and want advice before reapplying, book a consultation at either office. We read refusal letters carefully and advise only on reapplication if we believe the changed circumstances give you a genuine chance of approval — we will not take your money for a reapplication we do not believe in.

Why choose Mapshore for your UK visa from India

We have filed this before

Mapshore has been arranging visas alongside flights and holidays since 2005, so the checklist we hand you is the one that is working at that consulate now.

Your file is checked before it goes in

We read every document against the current requirement list first. Most straightforward refusals come down to a missing statement or a photo at the wrong size, and those are cheap to catch early.

Honest timelines, not best cases

We tell you the turnaround to plan around for your nationality and the season you are travelling in, and we say so early if your dates are too tight to be safe.

A refusal is not the end of it

Bring us the refusal letter. We work out which ground it was refused on, fix that specific thing, and file again rather than resubmitting the same file.

One named person on your file

You deal with the consultant handling your application rather than a queue, and we still pick up when something shifts mid-holiday.

UK visa questions from India

Yes, Indian applicants can reapply for a UK Standard Visitor visa from India after a refusal with no waiting period, but you must declare prior refusals and answer the ground in the Home Office letter. Visitor refusals have no appeal from India. Bring your refusal letter to Mapshore in Kerala and we help rebuild the case before resubmitting from India.

Travel insurance is not mandatory for a UK visitor visa from India, but it is strongly recommended for medical care in the UK where costs are high for Indian visitors. Policies bought in India covering the full UK stay are accepted. Mapshore in Kerala advises Indian families and older travellers to carry insurance to strengthen credibility and avoid hospital bills.

UK Standard Visitor visa processing from India is typically three weeks after biometrics at VFS Global India under the Home Office service standard, with priority services at some Indian centres to shorten the wait where offered. Indian peaks and summer increase timelines. Apply at least five weeks before travel from Kerala and keep your Indian phone reachable for queries.

From India a UK Standard Visitor visa costs GBP 135 for up to six months, GBP 506 for two years, GBP 903 for five years and GBP 1,128 for ten years under the April 2026 Home Office fees. Each Indian applicant pays separately and visitor visas do not attract the health surcharge from India. Fees paid in India are non refundable if refused.

From India you need a valid passport, six months of Indian bank statements, employment or business proof in India, itinerary and UK accommodation details, and a cover letter explaining purpose and strong ties to India. The UK has no fixed checklist for Indian applicants; Mapshore in Kerala reviews your Indian funds and ties before submitting your VFS India application.

From India a UK Standard Visitor visa allows up to six months per entry even on two, five or ten year visas issued in India. The border officer may stamp a shorter stay in your Indian passport and that date governs your legal stay. You cannot work or extend a visitor visa; overstaying harms future UK applications from India.
